All Good Things...

By Bjarke Pedersen & Lizzie Stark

Every relationship has to have an end. Join us for some drinks at our favorite East Village coffee shop, fall in love, and then let your heart break.

It’s Better To Have Loved And Lost…

In To the Bitter End you and a partner role-play the beginning, middle, and end of a romantic relationship. Over a series of scenes, your characters will meet, fall in love, and ultimately break-up. We’ll provide the drinks, you provide the drama. It lasts about two hours.

Designed by a team whose credits include Inside Hamlet and Leaving Mundania, this larp debuted at the Future of Storytelling in 2018.  This time, we’re taking over an entire coffee shop, providing drinks, and watching you and 20 other larpers go from the first blush of love to the wrenching, bitter end.

Description of Play

You’ll arrive at Thayer, either alone or with a partner. One of our facilitators will greet you at the door. They’ll also be your server, and will show you and your partner (if any) to your seats. If you arrive solo, we’ll pair you off right away. After you’re seated, you’ll have a few minutes to talk. Then we’ll take your drink orders, just as we’d do at any restaurant. We’ll also give you a set of cards that will guide you through the experience, and offer some guidance for how to play. After 10-15 minutes, you should have your drinks and understand play. Guided by the cards,  your pair  will play short scenes from the beginning, middle, and end of the characters’ relationship. In the scenario’s final scenes, you’ll role-play the break-up. Then the cards will guide you through a debrief. Afterwards, we encourage you to hang out and enjoy a drink (the landmark Horseshoe Bar is just across the street).

Important Information

An Opportunity for an Experience

To the Bitter End is a larp. You’ll tell the story through play, and  your decisions control the story. We respect the primacy of your play, so please understand that your larp might end early, or you might have an experience that significantly differs from your pre-event expectations.

Drinks Provided

As part of your experience, we’ll provide two drinks. We offer a variety of options, including coffee, tea, beer and wine. If you like, you can order more (including food options off the menu), but you’ll have to pay for them (including tax and tip).

Costuming

Please dress as you would for a date in the East Village. Please note that we don’t have space for your coats and bags: if you bring something, you’ll have to keep it at your table.

Accessibility

The Thayer has two levels–the first level is fully accessible. This larp includes written materials, so please let us know if you need a larger print or a reader. It also includes mood music; if you have any issues with the volume, please let your facilitator know. Please let us know if you have any other needs we can accommodate.

Advisories

Participants in To the Bitter End should expect light physical contact (such as hand-holding or touching the other person’s cheek). This physical contact, however, is not necessary for participation - merely let your partner know if you don’t wish to be touched. As part of the experience, you’ll be asked to look another person in the eye for about two minutes; you can opt out of this part of the experience with minimal impact.

If you arrive solo, we will partner you with a stranger with little or no input from you. If you have a strong desire for a different partner, you can let the facilitator know, and we’ll attempt to accommodate. However, it’s possible you will play this larp with someone of a gender you’re not attracted to. Please be prepared for that when you purchase a ticket.
